MobileVoIP Caller ID: not shown, or a foreign number appears

Your Caller ID is the number the people you call see. It must be verified once, and in some countries the operators now change what is shown. Both are explained here.

How to verify your Caller ID

In the app open Settings → Caller ID, enter your own mobile number with its country code and confirm with the code you receive by SMS or a short call. Several numbers can be verified; select the one to use. The same can be done on the web at voipinfocenter.com → How to call → SIP → Settings → "Caller ID for SIP". Calls without a verified Caller ID are refused for many destinations (code 587).

The recipient sees a foreign number instead of mine

Two causes, both outside the app:

  • A "national" call in the EU: calling a country with a Caller ID of that same country (a Hungarian number calling Hungary) is increasingly refused by the local operators. The provider then delivers the call with another number — French, Croatian, British, depending on the route — so your own number shows only sometimes.
  • Anti-spoofing rules: some operators in France, Spain and other EU countries replace a foreign Caller ID with a generic number.

Neither we nor the provider can change this. The workarounds: verify a Caller ID of another country and select it for those calls, or make them without a Caller ID.

The recipient sees "unknown" or "private number"

No Caller ID is selected, or it is not verified any more. Open Settings → Caller ID, verify and select your number, log out of the app and in again.

Can I use a number that is not mine?

No. Only numbers you can receive the verification code on can be used; the provider rejects everything else, as the law requires.

Still wrong after checking all this? Send us the date and time of one call and the number called (first digits are enough) through the contact form and we ask the provider to check the route. All questions →

Questions

Does the Caller ID cost anything?

No. Verifying and using your own number is free.

Why is my Hungarian number replaced when I call Hungary?

EU operators increasingly refuse "national" VoIP calls, so the provider delivers the call with another number. Use a verified Caller ID of another country for calls to Hungary, or none.

Can I verify a landline number?

Yes, with the verification call instead of the SMS code.
